Overview of the Role

The Senior Associate Editor is responsible for preparing accepted manuscripts for publication in monthly and bi-monthly journals; editing continuing education and feature articles as well as departments, which often requires substantial rewriting, reorganizing, and fact-checking; consulting with the Editors-in-Chief and Editorial Director, as well as team members; conducting extensive online research on clinical issues and other topics of interest to nurses; and working closely with authors. This editor is not only an impeccable writer, editor, and communicator but also is patient and diplomatic with authors.

This role reports to our Philadelphia PA office.

Essential Duties and responsibilities

  • Editorial

  • Acquisition, copyedit, write/rewrite articles, as assigned in accordance with the journal production schedule, ie: monthly, bimonthly, quarterly, etc.

  • Create attention-getting headlines, captions, callouts, and coverlines.

  • Review industry journals, newspapers, and websites weekly to identify newsworthy articles and article topics of interest.

  • Research, conduct interviews, and write or compile regular departments and features, as assigned and in accordance with the journal production schedule.

  • Proofread article PDFs for print and online formats throughout the production cycle.

  • Arrange for photographs, clinical charts/graphics, and other artwork to support articles.

  • Write and/or post news and updates to the journal website(s) two times per month, at minimum.

  • Work independently and take initiative on assigned editorial tasks.

  • Communication

  • Establish regular, face-to-face contact with Editorial Director meeting weekly to discuss editorial schedule and prioritizing workload as necessary.

  • Respond to calls and emails from outside sources, involving Editorial Director when needed.

  • Build professional rapport with assigned columnists and article authors.

  • Foster relationships and communicate with Editorial Director and outside Editors to become familiar with journal subject matter.

  • Work closely with design and production team(s) to ensure that journals maintain a fresh look and current content.

  • Route permissions and ad sales requests, as appropriate.

  • Digital Support

  • Receive eJP training and become adept at journal website administration.

  • Maintain journal website(s), ensuring they are up to date and make changes as instructed by Editorial Director.

  • Update journal websites and social media platforms with rich media (podcasts and videos) a minimum of 6 times annually.

  • Write monthly, bimonthly, or weekly e-newsletters to drive traffic to journal websites.

  • Regularly contribute to social media strategy and blogs weekly.

  • Conference attendance

  • Attend meetings for journals in person or by phone as determined in advance by Editorial Director or Publisher.

  • Participate in Editorial Board meetings and other journal meetings as applicable.

  • Attend 1 to 3 professional conferences annually and maximize time at each.

  • § Reviewing exhibits and competition on floor.

  • § Meet with key opinion leaders to acquisition articles and conduct interviews in accordance with editorial calendar.

  • § Attend Keynote address, general and breakout sessions, and poster exhibits to strengthen subject matter expertise.

  • § Contribute to trip reports, as needed.

  • § Staff booth during professional meetings, including set up and dismantling.

  • Administration

  • Prepare editorial "highlights" in advance of each upcoming issue, as needed, and distribute as appropriate.

  • Monitor website and e-newsletter analytics monthly.

  • Juggle multiple deadlines in accordance with journal production schedules.

Other Duties

Perform other job functions as assigned by the Editorial Director or Publisher. Expected to work independently, take initiative and ownership of journal tasks, and require minimal supervision.

Education: BA English/Journalism, or related field

Experience: 4 to 6 years in a publishing environment (medical or related field a plus)

Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Certifications: MS Office, Adobe Acrobat Pro, SEO and social media platforms

Travel requirements: 2-3 related conferences per year
