The Vice President (VP) of US Tax is a member of the Corporate Tax department (CTD) responsible for Wolters Kluwer NV Group's global Corporate Income Tax position. The VP will be responsible for tax compliance, tax risk management, and tax reporting for the Wolters Kluwer US Group of companies (WKUS) while controlling, managing and optimizing the tax charge and cash tax cost for WKUS and within the legal framework of pertinent laws, resolutions and tax treaties.

The VP of US Tax will also have responsibility for all compliance and reporting aspects of the tax function; including federal, state and international compliance with all US federal, state and local, country and provincial laws; WKUS tax reporting under IFRS for the consolidated group accounts; and strategic tax planning for acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures and other major business initiatives.

The VP will report to the Global Head of the CTD of the Wolters Kluwer group based in the Netherlands and manage the US tax department with a team of approximately 13 FTE's.


  • Develop appropriate strategic tax planning initiatives and recommendations to place WKUS in the most effective tax posture; manage US taxes by providing strategic tax solutions consistent with the Wolters Kluwer's business objectives and in full compliance with applicable tax laws

  • Maintain a superior knowledge base of tax laws for US Federal, State and Local jurisdictions, as well as expertise in IFRS/US GAAP tax accounting rules

  • Provide oversight and approval for tax reporting including management reporting, statutory and tax filings; review and approve total income tax provision, entries and cash tax payments

  • Direct, oversee and review the preparation of tax provisions and cash tax forecasts to be completed by the US tax department

  • Conduct final reviews of US federal and state income tax returns

  • Coordinate and work with others in senior management to help ensure WKUS-wide after-tax profits and cash flows are maximized

  • Formalize corporate tax policies and procedures to support the WKUS and Wolters Kluwer's governance and business objectives

  • Act and serve as a business partner to the operating units

  • Implement new tax policies, strategies, and procedures to support tax and other cross-functional initiatives, as appropriate

  • Monitor and analyze tax regulatory and compliance developments and tax law changes, and communicate its impact to key stakeholders in the financial leadership team and the operating units

  • Manage and provide oversight over tax controversy, including management of tax examinations by external governmental auditors and negotiate settlements with taxing authorities in the most cost-effective manner

  • Direct the implementation of special initiatives sponsored by senior management, and provide project support as needed

  • Manage relationships with outside tax consultants and help ensure WKUS is deriving the maximum benefit from those relationships

  • Manage relationship with the outside auditor and help ensure that the tax position of WKUS is correct, complete, fully documented and timely provided for interim and year-end audit

  • Provide management and administration of tax function, tax budgets and tax affairs of WKUS


  • A minimum of seventeen years of combined public accounting and corporate experience, with at least six years of direct experience managing a corporate tax function for a large multi-national company or equivalent professional services management experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university and CPA; Advanced degrees such as MBA, MS in Taxation, JD, and/or LLM strongly preferred

  • Extensive experience in identifying and analyzing complex tax issues and communicating their impact to key stakeholders and senior management in a clear, concise manner

  • Broad exposure to the merger, acquisition, divestiture area of finance, along with the creative ability to find unique solutions to tax and business problems

  • Demonstrated ability to interact and team with professionals in various functional areas to resolve complex tax issues throughout the organization

  • Proven track record of building high-performing teams and development of skills and capabilities of the tax function

  • Strong people skills with the ability to effectively communicate with management, senior management and stakeholders, as well as work with business unit operating and functional leadership and outside business advisors

  • Proficiency with IAS and other related accounting pronouncements and experience in their application
