Wolters Kluwer Director, Platform Engineering in Waltham, Massachusetts

Reporting into the Sr. Director, Platform, this role will lead the development of the Clinical Effectiveness platform, enabling transformation from offering customers individual, disconnected products to cross-product solutions. This person has deep technology expertise, and excels in collaboration, open communication, and reaching across functional borders to provide leadership for the definition and delivery of our products. This role must work across Clinical Effectiveness Product Engineering and Product Management teams to gain buy-in and collaboration on Platform objectives, implementing creative, compelling methods to leverage the broader organization to reach goals.


This is a highly-visible leadership role within the Clinical Effectiveness Engineering organization.

  • Lead a team of architects, developers and test engineers to build components necessary to centralize the Clinical Effectiveness platform, enabling both product integration and the sharing of technology across products.

  • Partner with Product Engineering teams throughout Clinical Effectiveness to build and adopt central platform components.

  • In collaboration with Product Management and Platform Architects, and with the understanding of the positive impact of addressing technical debt, define a roadmap that meets business needs and engineering goals.

  • Promote and spread the work of the team, demonstrating its value to other engineering teams and explaining its positive impact on the business to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Drive team to be a model for compliance with defined architectural patterns, test automation practices, and standards for comprehensive functional and technical documentation.

  • Drive talent recruiting and development, ensuring employees are challenged and successful. Set, evaluate, and manage performance goals for the team members.

  • Effectively lead to instill trust, empower team members, focus on business outcomes, and foster a learning culture. Help the team manage and resolve conflicts.

  • Collaborate with Product Management and Scrum Master to ensure that work is dynamically prioritized, well executed, and highly transparent. Coach team members in agile engineering practices and continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate with Product Managers and team members to write user stories which detail both customer requirements and the technical detail required for Platform projects.

  • Provide proactive technical guidance ensuring team is fostering re-use, design for scale, stability, and operational efficiency of solutions.

  • Enable development of deep and thorough unit, integration and interface automated tests by positioning quality as an overall team responsibility.

  • Foster a DevOps culture to ensure that applications can be built, tested, deployed and monitored in an efficient and automated manner.


  • Strong leader with minimum 10 years of experience in managing, coaching, and leading senior-level and mid-level staff on multi-functional teams for a B2B SaaS software company.

  • A proven track record of successfully executing software engineering initiatives using agile methodologies.

  • Experience working with distributed teams.

  • Demonstrated success attracting, developing, and retaining talented technology professionals.

  • Proven track record to drive complex engineering initiatives to completion on time and on budget.

  • Proven capability of managing multiple priorities effectively.

  • Competence working on large complex projects, including coordinating with multiple interdependent partner teams.

  • Demonstrated experience making architectural transformations in an incremental fashion, while meeting business-critical roadmap objectives.

  • Ability to communicate to all levels and functions of the organization (including executive management).

  • Balanced business/technical background. Sufficient level of technical background to provide highly-credible leadership to technology teams. Ability to accurately and objectively evaluate complex project risks and issues, and communicate these effectively to business stakeholders.

  • Ability to participate in the evaluation of the short and long-term implications of technical choices with respect to SDLC best practices, user functionality, application performance, and the potential accumulation of technical debt

  • Leadership -- Proven ability to participate in the development and implementation of strategy initiatives and strong technology leadership skills to drive execution.

  • Technologist -- Experience with and understanding of Microservices Architecture is a must. Knowledge and interest in the latest system architecture, automation, and data management trends with the ability to rapidly learn and apply new technology. Strong ability to utilize external resources to accelerate the team's adoption of new technologies.

  • Adaptation and Inclusion -- works with team members to understand pain points and adjust standards, tools, and best practices accordingly. Ability to dynamically adjust a plan, to resolve resource contention as well as to meet changing business needs.
