The Physician Deputy Editor will use his/her clinical knowledge to edit submissions from outside expert authors. The editing process ensures that the topic addresses the important clinical questions that arise when diagnosing or managing a specific disorder, presents information clearly and succinctly, and provides evidence-based and actionable recommendations for care. These tasks require the editor to have an understanding of clinical issues and an ability to evaluate the literature.

New Content: A good UpToDate topic review has the following characteristics:

  1. Addresses all of the questions that a clinician coming to that topic might have

  2. Cites the evidence to answer those questions

  3. Makes specific and actionable recommendations

Deputy editors review and edit the new contributions from our authors to make sure they incorporate these characteristics. This work is not done in isolation. UpToDate editors also work closely with outside section editors, editors-in-chief, and peer reviewers to ensure the material is accurate and fee of bias. In addition, in-house editorial and graphics assistants work with the deputy editors to produce and maintain each topic.

Extensive training is provided to help the editor learn critical literature review and to write in the UpToDate style. Training is overseen by at least two senior physician editors. All new topics are read and reviewed by the training editor until a new deputy editor achieves a satisfactory level of independence.

Existing Content: Updating is an important component of the program and is usually initiated by the deputy editor, who is responsible for monitoring the literature for new developments and identifying topics that need updating. The deputy editors in different specialties commonly interact with each other, since there is often overlap between specialties. Deputy editors write the initial updates and then review them with the authors and section editors.

Deputy editors also systematically review current UpToDate topics for clarity, completeness, and relevance. In many cases, reworking of specific topics will be initiated by clinical questions raised during ongoing clinical practice or by user feedback. If deficiencies are found, the deputy editor (in combination with the outside authors and section editors) will be responsible for improving the material.

  • Proficiency in typing and construction of graphics and spreadsheets (can be enhanced on the job)
